142/365 - The Sunset in Red

This is the sunset through the haze in our atmosphere! Unfortunately it does not show how red it was. Not the sky but the sun was like a red ball in the sky. We were able to look at the sun directly and not have to protect our eyes due to the haze. It was beautiful and Ryan agrees we need to get a better camera that will capture the colors that we see with the eye that for some reason do not translate the same on a camera. It was beautiful anyways!!

  1. I don't know what camera you have but this may have to do with the white balance settings. But also here is the problem- the sun is extremely bright. Your camera probably has an automatic mode that balanced out the exposure so that you could still see some detail in the foreground- but this would also make the sun so bright in the photo, there wouldn't be a chance for any colour. You could try and adjust for the sun instead of the foreground, but then the foreground becomes very dark, almost completely black.

In general, photos of the sunset are stupidly difficult to take. In order to really get the colours and the exposure right, you end up having to do all sorts of tricks. Filters, or fill light, or tripods...

But ALSO...you can adjust the photo in the computer to get more vibrance, or to change the white balance. Though that has its limits.

  2. Regardless of your camera, this is a lovely shot and it must have been a beauty to witness.

    I love it.
