172/365 Chain-off in PA

June 20 was ‘Chain-off’ day at the State Capitol.  Every year activists (initiated by Dogs Deserve Better) designate a day to advocate for anti-tethering laws for dogs.  This year, besides having chain-offs in various cities, they got close to 40 people on the Capitol steps from 7am-5pm.  This means sitting chained to a doghouse for 10 hours.

Unfortunately, Pennsylvania still lags behind several states in this type of legislation. :P
Early in the afternoon I had the chance to drive downtown to take a few pictures and talk to a few folks.  I also delivered a wedding card to the organizer (Tami), who was getting married on the same Capitol steps later in the day.

  1. I am a big dog lover my own self. I don't know how I feel about not tethering dogs or dogs off leash just running around. Living in the country we were able to allow to dogs to just "go" outside off leash, but in the city, dogs had to be on leashes out of the property.

Or is this pertaining to dogs on private property? That would be different I think.

Still I can't imagine being chained to a dog house or kennel for 10 hours. :D:D:D LOL.

  2. We are against the 24/7 chaining of dogs -- they are taken outside when young, chained to a doghouse, and left there for life. They have no human interaction, no exercise, lack of proper food and water, and definately lack of good health. Heartworm is not uncommon in these animals. :(

  3. How sad...
I'm not a dog person, but I don't condone such ill treatment of any animals.

    Interesting pictures, Tooks.
