251/365 Maiden & the Furisode

I took a lot of photos this week, but I'm dealing with a new camera and I can't seem to get the settings quite right so many of them were a bit out of focus. SO.. please bear with me.

A few weeks ago I posted photos of my daughter in her Yukata (informal) kimono. Sil mentioned that she had made herself a furisode. Furisode means 'long flowing sleeves' and it is one of the most elaborate of kimonos worn by an unmarried woman, often for a coming of age ceremony or part of a bridal ensemble.. Furisodes are longer than the average kimono & are meant to trail on the ground. They are weighted  at the bottom with a padded hem and are often elaborately dyed, embroidered, and otherwise brightly decorated.

There is not a heavy market in Japan for vintage (used) clothing, so one can often find beautiful pieces quite reasonably. This particular furisode was worn by a bride and is made of shiny silk. My daughter is hanging it  in her dorm as a work of art.

Again, sorry for the out of focus photos, but if you click on them  the larger versions are a bit more detailed.

  1. That is really beautiful and I think the shots came out just great. Rose will cherish this for a long long time. It will look excellent as art work.

    Very colorful. :D

  2. Pretty. :D
She was so lucky to have been able to spend some time in Japan.
I'm sure it will look great on her dorm wall.

  4. Hikizuri is the kimono you are thinking. Furisode are long sleeved kimono for unmarried women (like you said), but are NOT padded and do NOT trail. Hikizuri are dance kimono that are supposed to trail and are padded. The other type of kimono that is lightly padded and can trail on the ground is called a kakeshita, which is a kimono worn with the uchikake for weddings. The kimono you picture are hikizuri. :) And a very lovely one at that. I have one that is in the same style, but it is more of a sea green. Very very lovely blue that is!! <3
