73/365: Nessie
Taken outside the John Ball Zoo in Grand Rapids, MI. She's in the pond during the summer, and I've seen pictures of her there in the winter, so I'm not sure why they took her out, but she's sitting nearby right now, waiting until it's warm enough to go swimming again! In the meantime, she's surrounded by a net of unattractive red netting--sad!
This was an entry in the 2009 Grand Rapids Artprize contest, which gives artists a chance to display some really amazing artwork of all different media in all sorts of venues throughout GR. Nessie, for instance, was installed in the Grand River (you can see pictures if you do a search for "Nessie Grand Rapids" or something similar) before she was adopted by the John Ball Zoo. It's hard to tell from the picture, but the actual structure is a series of bumps meant to be spaced out so that it looks like she's snaking through the water. Maybe I'll get another picture sometime this summer.
